Pouch Information Day

If you’re new to pouch surgery, someone who has been living with a pouch for a while or someone considering pouch surgery then our Pouch Information Day 2019 is for you. The Pouch Information Day is open to anyone interested in learning more about internal pouches. Whatever your situation, it’s a great day that provides an opportunity to learn more about pouches, both from a medical and lifestyle perspective.

We are excited to announce that this year, in addition to focussing on ileoanal pouches (aka ‘J’ pouch), the day is being extended to people living with a Kock pouch (aka continent ileostomy).

The day will be a mix of surgical presentations, presentations from nurses on topics such as after care and managing your pouch and an opportunity to talk to people who are living with a pouch already. Additionally there will be time during the day totals to others and discuss what they are considering or how they are managing with a pouch.

We will be running a parallel day for attendees interested in attending the sessions on ileoanal pouch and those interested in Kock pouch. At the point of booking we will ask people to indicate which ‘day’ they are attending. Similar presentations will be run in each parallel session offering either an ileoanal or Kock pouch focus.

You can read more about the day in our flyer.

Q: Why are we including Kock pouch this year?

Given the low numbers of people living with a Kock pouch in the UK and the increased risk in failure of the pouch as the pouch ages, coupled with the reduced number of specialists with pouch experience to fix any issues with the pouch, people increasingly feel as though pouch excision and return to an ileostomy is there only option when issues arise. We have bought together specialist nurses and surgeons with that experience who can present options to people living with a Kock pouch so they do not feel alone and isolated. This will be a great way to hopefully restore confidence and provide options should people be faced with this choice in the future.
